The player’s rival is supposed to choose a Pokemon that has an advantage over the player’s Pokemon.  The basic goal that the game pursues is to become the best trainer in Johto as well as in Kanto regions.

Players are Pokemon trainers. They have to train a team of powerful Pokemon they have caught in order to be able to combat other teams and in the long run become the Pokemon Master.

A trainer can capture a wild Pokemon that he stumbles upon with a Poke Ball. However in case the Pokemon doesn’t manage to escape, he has to be submitted to that trainer. By the way, if a Pokemon manages to defeat his rival in a battle, his speed grows and attacks increase.
